During this consultation, your ophthalmologist will discuss your health history and perform a comprehensive eye exam to see whether you have any eye conditions that could prevent a successful procedure.
Your ophthalmologist will also measure parts of your eyes like the corneas and pupils. These measurements help determine whether the laser technology used during LASIK can successfully perform the procedure on your eyes. If your ophthalmologist determines that LASIK is a good fit for you, you’ll begin planning your surgery date and discussing what to expect.

During LASIK Surgery
To begin, you’ll relax in our comfortable surgical suite. LASIK is performed using local anesthetic eye drops and a mild sedative – you won’t feel anything except drowsy and calm. A specialized holder is placed over the eye to keep your eyelids in place and prevent your eyes from moving. It may impact your vision, which is normal.
Once you’re ready, your ophthalmologist will use a state-of-the-art excimer laser platform to create a flap in your cornea, which exposes the tissue underneath. The laser will then precisely reshape the cornea according to your prescription and eye measurements. Once complete, the flap will be replaced and a special cover will be placed over your eye to help it heal and prevent the flap from being disturbed while it reattaches.
Overall, the surgical part of LASIK takes as little 12 minutes. Because it relies almost entirely on laser technology, it’s an extremely low-risk procedure.
After LASIK Surgery
Since you’ll be drowsy after your procedure, you’ll need to arrange for a close friend or family member to bring you home. You should plan to rest immediately after your procedure, but most patients can return to office-based work the next day. It’s normal to experience some symptoms like dry eyes, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light. You’ll be given eye drops to help prevent itchiness or dryness. Make sure to avoid rubbing, touching, or otherwise disturbing your eyes as they heal.
You’ll follow up with our office after your procedure to make sure your eyes are healing as they should. It can take a few weeks for your vision to adjust, but most patients enjoy clear vision immediately after LASIK. As long as you follow your ophthalmologist’s aftercare instructions and return for your regular eye check-ups, you can enjoy clear and healthy vision for the long term after LASIK.
