Although this test cannot conclusively determine that you can or should undergo LASIK, it can help Boston Laser definitively conclude that you are not an appropriate candidate. Certain lifestyle choices—such as playing contact sports on a regular basis—are not compatible with LASIK, and questions about these choices are included in the self-evaluation.
Meeting with the Ophthalmologist
If your self-evaluation indicates that you’re potentially a good candidate for LASIK, the next step is to meet with an ophthalmologist. This preoperative visit is necessary because even though you may be an excellent candidate for LASIK on the surface, it’s possible that you have complicating factors that you’re not aware of.
What the Ophthalmologist Will Test for
Your ophthalmologist needs to know how long you’ve worn glasses or contact lenses and for what reason; it’s a good idea to get a copy of your regular ophthalmologist’s records for reference. The ophthalmologist will also need to test your eyes to see if they’re unusually dry, as well as dilate your pupils to ensure that your retinas are healthy. The size of your pupils will also be noted. Once the doctor has measured how thick your corneas are, you will undergo a regular eye exam to find out what your current prescription should be.
