LASIK Questions: Who is a Good Candidate?

lasik-questions-who-is-a-good-candidate

Most people who have spent their entire adult lives wearing glasses or contacts would do anything to be able to get up in the morning and see perfectly simply by opening their eyes. Due to advances in eye surgery over the last few decades, this is increasingly becoming a possibility for many of those people. What traits does a good LASIK candidate possess?

Good Overall Health

LASIK is a surgery, and like all surgeries, it is easier to recover from the procedure if you are in good overall health. You don’t have to be an Olympic athlete in order to have LASIK performed, but it is best if you do not have a preexisting condition or take a medication that would suppress your immune system.

A Stable Prescription

Good LASIK candidates do not have eyes that are constantly in need of new prescriptions. After all, if your eyes were still changing when you had LASIK, then it would only be a matter of time before they would begin to shift again despite the surgery. You need to wait until your prescription has been the same for two straight years before you can get LASIK laser eye surgery. Don’t worry if your eyes are still changing, however: These changes can be due to pregnancy, certain medications, and youth, which means that they may eventually stop. Once they have, you will be able to have LASIK.

No Interest in Contact Sports

Unfortunately, being a contact sport enthusiast means that LASIK would most likely not be successful for you. These sports, such as martial arts or boxing, include repeated, periodic hits—often striking the head or even the eyes themselves. This can cause catastrophic damage to your vision, damage that LASIK simply cannot fix.

If you’re interested in LASIK and believe that you would be a good candidate, then you should consult with Boston Laser. Boston Laser provides LASIK and other laser vision correction and laser surgery techniques. For more information, call us at (617) 566-0062 or visit our website today.
